- Boreal Forest
- Scrub
- "Triassic"
- "Jurassic"
- "Cretaceous"
Unused Cheat Code[]
In the internal files for Zoo Tycoon, there exists an unused cheat code name for exhibits, being "Kathmandu". This would've functioned similarly to "Xanadu" and "Cretaceous Corral" exhibit names, but unlocking that Yeti instead.
Unused Locations[]
In the files for Zoo Tycoon, there exists two unused location icons for animals and/or foliage. One is part of the base game, and the other is from Marine Mania:
- Eastern USA
- Northern Atlantic Ocean
Developer Mode[]
A developer mode can be activated in this game. First, adddevModeEnabled=1under
[advanced]in
Program Files\Microsoft Games\Zoo Tycoon\zoo.ini
Then, at any time in-game, press CTRL and D to activate the developer mode. Clicking the little x at the top of the navigation opens up a new panel (strangely titled "Giant Panda").
You can do the following using this mode:
- Add a few buildings and decorations that are not normally available to be placed in your zoo.
- Modify the park entrance.
- Place buildings outside the park.
- Remove items not normally removable (for example, food and poo, or 'zoo doo' as the game calls it).
- Modify the amount of money your zoo currently has.
Also, placing a zoo entrance will allow guests to enter from anywhere. Deactivate by pressing CTRL+D again.
Unused Graphics[]
Unused Sounds[]
Intended purpose unknown. This sound was later used in Zoo Tycoon DS.
Intended purpose still unknown. This sound was later used in Zoo Tycoon DS.
Ambient crowd noise. This was used in the prototype. The final version has three other crowd sounds that are used instead.
A toilet flushing with a baby crying. What an interesting combo. This was also used in the prototype, when the larger restroom is used. The final version uses the same sound as the smaller restroom.
Unused Text[]
Found in lang0.dll (lang0.lang on the Mac version) are lots of unused text strings referring to unimplemented features.

This zoo is pretty nice, though it could use some improvements. This zoo is mediocre. I can take it or leave it. I'm starting to get a little ticked off. I'm really angry! I really like the family restroom. Wow, I really like the way the animal exhibits are laid out. There seems to be a lot of sick animals in this exhibit. I like the way they have grouped animals in this zoo. This area is quite lovely. This zoo is awfully crowded. This zoo is something else! I just don't like the look of this zoo. A pony ride! I love pony rides! The playground is wonderful fun! The souvenir shop has some great gifts! An information booth. Let's ask directions. Here's the animal hospital. This must be where they treat the really sick animals. Let's see the zoo from up in the gondola! These umbrella tables protect you from the sun's rays. Oh, the flower beds are so pretty! The water from the drinking fountain tastes good. These binocular stands are helpful. Rock gardens are one of my favorite things! Looking at this zoo map will prevent me from getting lost. |

Scrapped Animal Attacks[]
Several Marine Mania animals have coding in reference to the sound they'd make after attacking an adult male guest, with the animals in question being the Beluga, Elephant Seal, Humpback Whale, Manta Ray, Green Moray Eel, Narwhal, West Indian Manatee, Bluefin Tuna, and Pacific Walrus. In addition, the Whale Shark is coded to eat guests, but does will not seek them out as prey.
Scrapped Show Animals[]
The Mermaid, Narwhal, and Harbor Porpoise all have coding relating to performing tricks in shows, suggesting they were planned to be show animals before having their tricks scrapped.
Old Animal Designs[]
Several animals underwent design revisions before their commercial releases:
- The American Bighorn Sheep ram was textured the same as the ewe
- The Apatosaurus was green, had a much thicker neck, and had a less bird-like head
- The Herrerasaurus was blue with a red mouth
- The Caudipteryx had a white beak and less feathering
- The Tyrannosaurus rex had a blue head
- The Iguanodon was darker in colour with orange
Female Bigfoot[]
- Bigfoot has an unused female sprite set that is replaced by the male's sprite set in the release of the Endangered Species Theme Pack. It was likely replaced due to the suggestive nature of the sprites.

Unused Animations |
Unused Graphics |
Main Game[]
Animals[]
Chicken[]
For more information about Chicken, see here
A XML file of this can be found in the "sounds" folder, with sound tags associated to eating and squawking. Although the files related to the chicken is removed in the final version, it is possible it may have been a scrapped ambient animal or there was originally going to be a petting zoo.
Sheep[]
For unused animations of the sheep, see here
An unused animal model of a sheep can be found in the "animals" folder. Notably, it lacks several animations that would need to make a functional living adoptable. It is assumed that a petting zoo was planned but was scrapped early in the development. Alongside the model, there also exist several sound files, including young variation, that the sheep would use.
Shetland Pony[]
For unused animations of the Shetland pony, see here
While technically not unused, several unused animations and sounds can be found in the animal's folder, indicating it would have play a larger role in the game such as being more interactive in a petting zoo attraction.
Adult Guests[]
Hipster Variant[]
For more information about Hipster Variant, see here
An unused variant exists within the game files, named "Head_Adult_M_Hipster" and "Head_Adult_M_HipsterGlasses." Their textures are removed in the final version and their UVs are slightly different than the used variants. Supposedly, the unused pale skin variant, would be used for this variant.
Feeding Dispenser[]
Named "Guest_Adult_FeedingDispenserPay" in wav file, it seems to be guests interacting the unused pellet dispenser.
Animal Skins[]
Buildings[]
Animal Theatre[]
Not much is known about the building, other than its leftover audio files. It would have likely serve educational or amusement needs.
Gift Shop[]
Interesting, there are a few details left about this building in the final version of the game.
An unused sign texture "df_sign_giftshop_front_a" can be found in the "giftshop_df" folder, which may have been used in the earlier version of the gift shop before it was switched to a fully 3D-animated sign. There are also seven disassembled sound files which were used for the ambient background. It is unknown why they are left in the final release. Lastly, the roof was originally going to be purple based on the material name.
Giraffe Swing[]
For more information about Giraffe Swing, see here
Not much is known about the playground building, other than its leftover audio files. It would have likely serve amusement needs. One of the concept arts drawn by art designer Shane Patrick White at the time features a giraffe-themed swing, though it is not known this is the intended design and may have been an earlier iteration.
Shetland Pony Ride[]
For more information about Shetland Pony Ride, see here
There exists a few txtkey files which are not used in-game: PonyRide_TAP_Bip01_DockNode00_PonyPath, PonyRide_TAP_Bip01_DockNode01_ChildPath, PonyRide_TAP_Bip01_DockNode02_TrainerPath. As the file name suggests, it is a TAP path for the said pony, young guests, and a trainer. There are two unused textures, which one of the latter is presumably the female trainer.
Sceneries[]
Kids' Footstool[]
For more information about Kids' Footstool, see here
Originally, there was a scenery object that allows young guests to climb up the footstool for better view of the exhibits. A few remnants of the object such as the behaviour and task file can be found within the game files. It is presumably removed due to the binocular stand already serving the purpose. In one of the pre-release screenshots, you can find a number of the footstools placed beside each other.

Unknown Theme Musical Rock[]
There's a mention of "musicalrock_ac" that can be found in buildings.xml in the sound folder, implying a fourth musical rock. A leftover sound file can be found in the sound folder of the normal musical rock, presumably misplaced. This object seems to be removed quite early.
Pellet Dispenser[]
For more information about Pellet Dispenser, see here
There is an unused object found in the "scenery" folder. It is assumed that there was supposed to be a petting zoo (which would explained the unused sheep) but it was scrapped. In addition, "Terrain" Pellets can also be found in the folder along with its associated xml and incomplete icon file, which is supposed to function as a interactable decal object.
Food[]
Berries[]
(not to be confused with berries from Endangered Species)
For more information about Berries, see here
Berries were implied to make their debut earlier in the base game, according to its unused entry string and a low quality texture leftover.

Peanuts[]
(not to be confused with peanut feeder)
For more information about Peanuts, see here
A low quality texture of terrain peanuts and entry for it can be found within the game files. Interestingly, the empty termite mound entry mentions peanuts despite not appearing in the game.

Miscellaneous[]
Crates[]
In the files of Zoo Tycoon 2, there exist 2 unused sizes of crates (being large and small, as opposed to medium being the only used size of crate). It would have been likely used for different animals depending on their size.
Gifts[]
Several unused textures of several animals in gift form can be found within the "Gifts" folder. It seems that all of the animals were originally intended to be stuffed toys at one point before it was eventually decided that each of them will differ from one another. There's also three variations of a blue zoo hat featuring the monkey mascot that would have likely served as a default gift but was scrapped for entirely unknown reasons.
Stick Sprites[]
In the main "shared" folder, there are several 2D stick sprites displaying levels of quantity. It is unknown if they are related to the removed pile of sticks in the beta 1 build.
User Interface[]
Locations[]
Much like the first game, Zoo Tycoon 2 contains several unused location icons for animals and/or foliage (although, with the sole exception of the location intended to be for the green pitcher plant, it is unknown as to what animals or foliage in particular would've used any of the other icons):
- Arctic Ocean
- Asia
- Asia ("India")
- Europe
- India
- Madagascar
- New Zealand
- North America (Green Pitcher Plant)
- Spain
- West Africa
Globe[]
There is an unused model of the globe in the "globe" folder. As the name suggests, it is most likely used for testing.
Scenarios[]
Complete Ecosystem Scenario[]
There exist files for a scenario which would have been part of the The Globe campaign, called "Complete Ecosystem" (with the codename "HugeBiome"), and was intended as the 4th scenario of the campaign (with The World's Biomes being the 5th scenario). This scenario is referred to with the following text and objectives:
Complete Ecosystem description text |
---|
Guests particularly enjoy exhibits that resemble the natural habitat of the animals they house. They are even more impressed when an entire ecosystem can be modeled within such an exhibit. Create a savannah exhibit that contains both herbivores and carnivores. Ensure that their environment needs are met. As long as your carnivores' food needs are being met by your zookeepers, your herbivores should be safe. To make the exhibit a success, you will need at least six herbivores and four carnivores within the same area. Continue to run this exhibit for four months. As long as you maintain this exhibit, you will receive an additional $2,000 per month in grant funding to help pay the staff cost likely required to keep this running smoothly. |
Complete Ecosystem objectives and failure text |
---|
Create a savannah exhibit that contains both herbivores and carnivores but keep your carnivores well fed to avoid any unfortunate accidents! Your ecosystem has been successful over the four month trial period. Guests enjoyed the exhibit immensely in spite of the additional stress on zoo staff to keep the carnivores sated! Your ecosystem exhibit has failed as you were unable to prevent your carnivores from attacking your herbivores. You have lost all funding for this program. Your zoo has suffered a serious setback when one of your guests witnessed one of your animals become prey to another. Your biome exhibit is considered a failure and parents are outraged that their children were exposed to the brutality of a live animal becoming prey to another. Regrettably your zoo has had to put a significant sum of money into escrow to pay the legal fees expected as a result of the lawsuit filed on behalf of the Outraged Parents Coalition. A successful ecosystem demonstration! Create a savannah exhibit combining four carnivores and six herbivores within the same area. Run this exhibit for four months and ensure that no herbivores get injured. Congratulations! You have succeeded displaying an entire ecosystem without allowing any animals to be injured. Your display of an ecosystem, unfortunately, has resulted in tragedy. Carnivores need to be well-fed! |
No map files for this scenario exist, though lang strings refer to it taking place on a medium-sized grassland map in San Diego like The World's Biomes. The player would have $30,000 in beginning cash to complete the scenario goals.
Endangered Species[]
Animal Skins[]
Buildings[]
Early Discovery Kiosk[]
Interestingly, there are two differently named folders containing the educational kiosk (adult_ent_center and adult_ent_center_end). One of the folders contain an early version of the Discovery Kiosk, featuring an antenna in place of the monkey statue. The TV screens do not display different images.
Enrichments[]
Green Small Toy Ball[]
Found in the "balls" folder, this seems to be a green variant of the small toy ball. It is entirely unknown why it went unused.
Fences[]
Log Fences[]
A codename "logfence_ft," "lowlogfence_ft," and "logwindow_ft" can be found mentioned in one of the few animals' AI tasks. It is unknown if these are developer objects or scrapped fences.
Miscellaneous[]
Gifts[]
Aside from a few models, whose textures are lost, the unused gifts have both their texture and model intact. It is presumed these were changed to give more variety in gifts.
Transportations[]
Early Jeeps[]
For more information about Four-Seater Jeep, see here
The jeeps were originally much smaller and resembled like a buggy, as seen in one of the many pre-release screenshots or inside box covers. Remnants of these early designs can be found within the game files, albeit in a texture form as the models were already removed from the game. Six Seater and Eight Seater were named as "Six-Seat" and "Eight-Seat" in the zoopedia entry (suggesting that each vehicle was meant to have their own separate entry), though they are incomplete and never seen in-game.
Dino Danger Pack[]
Animal Skins[]
Dino Danger Skins[]
Before it was changed, the original skins of the animal from dino danger were brighter and more colorful.
Green Baby Styracosaurus[]
In the files of the Dino Danger Pack, the baby Styracosaurus has an associated green texture. This indicates that this textures was intended for the baby instead of simply using the textures of the adults. In Extinct Animals, this texture is replaced by the adult female texture from the Dino Danger Pack.
Marine Mania[]
User Interface[]
Training Leftovers[]
There exists two early leftovers of the first-person training mode within the ui "shared" folder, presumably used in the early development.
Fill and Empty Tank[]
Two tank manipulations, Fill Tank and Empty Tank, which would have allowed players to fill or empty the tank went unused in the final version. Based on the empty tank preview placeholder, they seem to have been removed quite early in the development. Buttons for said unused tank manipulations were updated in accordance with later expansion but not for Ultimate Collection. Leftovers such as strings and sounds can be found in both UI and lang folders (tankmanip.xml, ui.xml, etc.). Both functions have been completely removed from the game's executable. There are associated functions such as "ZT_FILL_TANK" and "ZT_DRAIN_TANK" but they cannot be used by any normal or modding means.

Testing leftover .nif files[]
These leftovers can be found in the adult male's folder, which are likely meant for animation testing purposes. Some of the model files include an additional object other than just the guest's full body, such as early versions of the touch pool and grandstands. A few of them are also featured in one of the animation reels uploaded by the one of the game developers Calvin Barreto.
Extinct Animals[]
Buildings[]
Greenhouse[]
A "greenhouse" LUA script and a few related tasks in "Workers.tsk" can be found in the game files. Workers would have been able to use the greenhouse for planting and filtering by biome, presumably to cultivate extinct plants instead.
Diseases[]
There exist 4 scrapped diseases in the game's files, with no given causes or cures. These diseases are known from the following codenames and effects:
- Bloodlust - affects all predators and causes them to immediately attack any animal in their exhibit.
- Fertility - affects any animal and causes them to mate excessively.
- Malnutrition - affects any animal and causes them to quickly starve.
- Wanderlust - affects any animal and causes them to immediately attempt to escape their exhibit.
Fences[]
Dino Danger Dinosaur Fence[]
Before it was release, one of the pre-screenshot was shown to have the new skin of Tyrannosaurus rex, the original dinosaur fence and one of the extinct animals gameplay mechanic. There is a file for the old one located in the "DLC" folder but it doesn't have the gate model anymore and the texture has been modified.
Ultimate Animal Collection[]
Test Bunnies[]
In the Ultimate Animal Collection, there exists several models of unused rabbits; they are named as "rabbit", "rabbitbase", "rabbitgrey", and "rabbitwhite". The location of these models suggests that they were made for testing purposes.

New Shores[]
Scrapped Standard Edition[]
Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game - New Shores was originally going to have a Standard Edition made, just like the base game, and be priced at $75 CHF ($85 USD). The Standard Edition of the New Shores expansion would be exactly the same as the Deluxe Edition, only lacking the screen-print on the meeples and not having the Additional Species Pack included. However, plans for this version of the game were scrapped due to not enough backers backing the tier during the Kickstarter campaign, with only 27 backers in total. As such, it was too costly to produce for such a low number of backers and so the 27 backers were given the option to either upgrade, or receive a refund.
Cut Species[]
Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game - New Shores has several cut species from its roster, including Co-Species and several Animal House species.
Pre-reveal[]
The Vancouver Island Marmot was considered for the expansion early in its development but was ultimately cut before the first reveal of the expansion.
Cut Co-Species[]
The Jabiru was originally going to return in New Shores as a Co-Species and be part of the new Gran Chaco National Park conservation project but was ultimately replaced.
The Axis Deer was also going to return as a Co-Species in New Shores, but was also ultimately replaced.
The Common Dwarf Mongoose was also slated to be in the expansion during the livestream as a Dry Forest Co-Species but was ultimately replaced by the White-Nosed Coati.
The Giant Armadillo was seen to be in the expansion during the livestream as a Dry Forest Co-Species but was ultimately replaced by the White-Nosed Coati.
The Arctic Hare was seen in the original Reveal Stream and was originally going to be a Tundra animal in the Northeast Greenland Conservation Project. The Arctic Hare was then slated to be replaced by the Common Eider, but the Eider was also cut and ultimately replaced by the Siberian Crane.
Animal House Species[]
Several Animal House or Vivarium species were cut during the development of the animal House roster for various reasons.
The Animal House species were determined by a community vote, held on Treecer's Discord. Originally, there were a total of 51 species chosen for the Animal House before the roster was cut down to 43 due to a calculation error. This resulted in eight species all being removed from the final game.
Rainforest[]
The Green Tree Python was part of the original roster before ultimately being replaced by the Emerald Tree Boa.
The Red-Crested Turaco was originally slated to be a Dry Forest bird species before being switched with the Toco Toucan into Rainforest. The Red-Crested Turaco was then ultimately cut due to the calculation error.
The Tomato Frog was going to be a Rainforest amphibian but became one of the eight species cut due to the calculation error.
Dry Forest[]
The Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake was originally going to be a Dry Forest animal before it was pointed out by community members that the Eastern Diamondback lives in more wet environments, suggesting the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake as a replacement instead. This suggestion went through, and the Eastern Diamondback was officially replaced.
The Frilled Lizard was going to be one of the three Dry Forest reptile species to be included in the Animal House but was cut due to the calculation error.
Termites were originally going to be a Savannah invertebrate species before being swapped with the Emperor Scorpion to Dry Forest. Termites though would later be cut altogether due to the calculation error.
Water[]
The Pond Slider turtle was cut from the roster after a community member suggested the Diamondback Terrapin as a replacement for its ability to live in both fresh and saltwater, making it an ideal Co-Species for saltwater animals, this suggestion went through and the Pond Slider was ultimately cut
Savannah[]
The Swallow-Tailed Bee-Eater made the Animal House Roster after the initial reveal, only to be later replaced by the Northern Carmine Bee-Eater.
The Red-Billed Hornbill was slated to be a Savannah bird species for the Animal House before it was cut due to the calculation error.
The African Ornate Frog was a Savannah amphibian for the Animal House before becoming one of the eight species cut due to the calculation error.
The Migratory Locust was going to be a Savannah invertebrate species for the Animal House before being cut due to the calculation error.
