The Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is a large pinniped from Arctic North America and Asia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon 2, and Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game, being identified specifically as the Pacific Walrus (Odobenus rosmarus divergens) in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.
Description[]
The walrus is one of the largest members of the pinniped family and is easily identifiable due to its large size and long tusks. Males weigh up to 1700kg (3700lbs), of which roughly 20% comes from its thick hide and blubber, but some individuals may weigh more. Both males and females have tusks, which they use in defense against predators or rivals, as well as to help the walrus climb out of water onto ice. The walrus' Latin name translates to "Tooth Walk".
Walrus' are well adapted for life in the Arctic, with their thick blubber keeping them warm in the cold oceans. They use their long, sensitive whiskers to detect clams and other shelled animals at the bottom of the ocean, where it is considered a keystone species. They will often gather in large colonies on land to rest. Because of its large size and tusks, walrus' have few predators, with only the Polar Bear and Orca known to hunt them.
Zoo Tycoon[]
The Pacific Walrus is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Freeform mode, it is not adoptable until September 1st.
The Pacific Walrus, like all Marine Mania animals, is an Aquatic animal, but unlike many animals added to the expansion, it requires a land section in its habitat. As such, it can be housed in either a hybrid exhibit or a standard enclosure, and will require a zookeeper to feed it rather than a marine specialist. The Pacific walrus' land section requires a large amount of snow and some grey stone. The Pacific walrus' favorite foliage is Beach Grass and it is also easy to maximize its habitat suitability.
Zoo Tycoon 2[]
The Pacific Walrus is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the Marine Mania expansion pack. In Campaign and Challenge mode, it is unlocked when a zoo reaches a ranking of 4 and a half stars.
The Pacific walrus is a tundra animal and, as in the last game, requires some form of land in its habitat. As well as a hybrid or standard exhibit, it can also be housed in a single tank, provided it has a Rock Island shelter for it to rest on.
The Pacific walrus can perform in shows in Zoo Tycoon 2. The Pacific walrus has the least amount of tricks of any animal in Marine Mania, being limited to only three, though all three have a medium to high popularity rating.

| The Pacific walrus (from the Old Norse hvall-hross, meaning “whale-horse”) is found in the Arctic at the edge of the polar ice. They are very large and have thick, wrinkled, hairy skin and relatively small heads with no external ears. They have enormously elongated upper canine teeth forming heavy tusks that are used as weapons in fighting and as hooks when climbing on ice. Their sensitive whiskers and fleshy snout help them find prey on the ocean floor. The walrus sometimes dislodges its favorite food—clams—by blowing them loose with a jet of water. Walruses are social animals and congregate in large herds—sometimes numbering several thousand animals. |
