The Warthog (Phacochoerus africanus), known as the African Warthog in Zoo Tycoon, and more accurately the Common Warthog, is a species of medium-sized African ungulate. It is an adoptable animal in both Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2.

Description[]

The Warthog is a member of the pig family native to the grasslands, savannahs and forests of Africa. It is named after the facial wattles that are particularly prominent in males, which can weigh up to 150kg (330lb). Male warthogs also possess large tusks on both the upper and lower jaws, which are predominantly used for fighting and defense. Female warthogs are smaller, with less-pronounced tusks and wattles.

As with all members of the pig family, warthogs are omnivorous, but they are the only species of pig adapted for grazing. They will often move around on their wrists to eat grass, as well as use their snout and feet to dig for roots. They are capable diggers and will often dig a burrow to rest in, although they are just as likely to use abandoned aardvark burrows as shelter. Female warthogs live in large groups known as "sounders", whilst males lead more solitary lives.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The African Warthog is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available in the base game. In Freeform Mode, it is not adoptable until June 1st.

Although the African warthog is a savannah animal, it requires a large amount of dirt in its exhibit, more so than savannah grass. Although it is easy to keep, this makes it very difficult to mix with other savannah animals. Warthogs breed rapidly and will have several babies at a time. If researched, they will use a burrow shelter.

Curiously, they enjoy being with a variety of animals, including several that they are incompatible with exhibit-wise such as the Okapi, Javan Rhinoceros, and Przewalski's Wild Horse.

Zoo Tycoon 2[]

The Warthog is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2 and was added as part of the African Adventure expansion pack. It is available in Challenge and Campaign mode once a zoo has 3 stars of fame.

The warthog is once again a savannah animal, but due to changes in exhibit requirements, it is far easier to mix with other savannah species.

zootycoon.com Description
The warthog is a wild pig with a stocky body and two pairs of tusks and wart-like protuberances on its long, wide head. Widespread on the plains and open woodlands of Africa, their diet includes grass, berries, bark, roots, and carrion. They normally spend the night in a burrow, which they prefer to take over from other animals (especially aardvarks). The warthog's tusks are sharp weapons used against such predators as lions.

Trivia[]

  • In Zoo Tycoon 2, the warthog's Zoopedia entry gives it the scientific name of Phacochoerus africanus aethiopicus, which doesn't exist. However, the desert warthog does have the scientific name of Phacochoerus aethiopicus.
    • Curiously, the Animal Escapade for the warthog refers to it as Phacochoerus aethiopicus, even though the common warthog is featured in both Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2, most likely as the monotypic species.
