The Yeti is a large cryptid said to be native to Asia. It is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 DS.

Description[]

The yeti, known locally as Meh-Teh and alternatively as the Abominable Snowman, is a large ape-like creature that is believed to inhabit the Himalayan mountain range in Central Asia. It is described as a tall bipedal primate. Contrary to popular modern depictions, there has never been any report of a white yeti; most eyewitness accounts describe it as being gray or brown.

The yeti dates back to before the 19th century, where it features in the folklore of many indigenous people, and in some communities and religions, it was worshipped as a "God of the Hunt". In 1832, the tracker B. H. Hodgson described a tall bipedal creature in northern Nepal and since then, other people have either claimed to have seen a yeti or discovered "evidence" such as footprints or hair. Although many of these sightings and discoveries were confirmed as hoaxes, such as DNA confirming that hair samples were actually from bears, it is possible that the sightings may have been misidentifications of local animals such as the Himalayan Brown Bear.

Zoo Tycoon[]

The yeti is an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon and is available as a downloadable animal.

The yeti is a tundra animal and has a strong preference for snow in its exhibit, as well as some gray stone. Like highland animals, it requires an elevated exhibit and likes the Snowy Rock Cave as a shelter. Like the polar bear and Arctic wolf, the yeti requires a combination of Small or Medium Snowy Rocks and Snowy Rock Formations to achieve a habitat suitability of 100%.

The yeti is a very difficult animal to breed, needing to have a happiness of 99% to breed, just like the Giant Panda.

Zoo Tycoon 2 DS[]

Although not an adoptable animal in Zoo Tycoon 2, the yeti is an adoptable animal in its DS port, Zoo Tycoon 2 DS. It lives in the tundra biome and is classed as an "Amazing Animal", unlockable by completing objectives in a Freeform zoo.

Trivia[]

  • In Zoo Tycoon, the yeti features several notable glitches and oddities not seen in any other animal in the game.
    • Despite being listed as a Tundra animal, its adoption icon and information plaque both have the backgrounds of a Highland animal. It is also listed as living in the Arctic, despite being a cryptid from the Himalayas.
    • It is consistently listed in the Animal Adoption menu, even in scenarios with a specifically limited animal roster, such as the Small Zoo scenario.
    • Simply placing a yeti in an exhibit, regardless of suitability, will have the individual giving a negative response.
    • Much larger predators, such as Tyrannosaurus rex, ignore the yeti and do not try to attack it.
  • An unused cheat code exists where the yeti would have been unlocked by naming an exhibit "Kathmandu". It is unknown why the yeti was moved from being an Easter Egg animal into being a bonus download.
  • Unlike other animals, the yeti's internal codename is not a short form of its name. Rather, it uses a mix of letters and numbers, being "B101B026".
    • This is related to the fact that the yeti's file is formatted in .uca (user-created animal), resembling an animal coded from APE. The program generated a file with a randomised codename, as opposed to the codenames being composed from the animal's actual name in a .ai file.
  • Datamining suggests that yetis originally had the NameID of 5047, but has since been changed to 19000 (the HelpID was also changed to 5004, making the yeti the only animal whose NameID and HelpID are different numbers).
  • The yeti is also the only animal who shares a HelpID with another animal, being the Plains Zebra.
    • The yeti and the Unicorn are the only animals in Zoo Tycoon 2 DS that were not originally present in the original PC game.
  • One sound effect made by yetis is a noise made by the Bantha from Star Wars.
  • The models used in Zoo Tycoon 2 DS are mapped similarly to the beta model for the mountain gorillas, suggesting that the developers for the spin-off had access to pre-release game material.
