Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game - New Shores is an upcoming Expansion pack for Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game. First revealed on January 21, 2024 via a YouTube Livestream, it is developed by Treeceratops. The Kickstarter for the pack launched on July 2, 2024.
Additions[]
As its name suggests, New Shores places a heavy focus on aquatic and semiaquatic animals, as well as animals from island regions such as Australia. Three new biomes are introduced; Dry Forest, Tundra and Water. While Dry Forest and Tundra function identically to the biomes from the base game, Water is unique in that it incurs a running cost for each tile added. Any animal species native to this biome will not incur running costs themselves.
Certain species are semi-aquatic, requiring a specific amount of water in their exhibit alongside their designated biome(s). Unlike fully-aquatic exhibits, semi-aquatic species cannot be placed directly on water tiles and they still incur a running cost alongside that of the water. Some semi-aquatic species gain popularity bonuses depending on how much water is placed in their exhibit, whilst others are compatible with both land and aquatic co-species.
One of the new animal orders included in New Shores are reptiles, which feature their own unique requirements. Unlike other animals, reptiles lay eggs. These eggs are considered gender-neutral, allowing the player to choose whether they will be male or female, either when converting them into adults or giving them away in the Animal Market. Instead of retreats, reptiles also require reptile houses, represented by their own meeple, in order to be satisfied.
Animals[]
New Shores introduces 26 "main" species and 11 "Co-species", with two co-species from the base game - the Giant Anteater and Tundra Swan - returning with new characteristics, bringing the total species number to 72. As with the base game, each animal has its own characteristics regarding popularity, education and conservation. New orders have been added, including reptiles and marsupials.
Unlike the base game, where each animal species was native to one biome, certain species in New Shores are compatible with multiple biomes, allowing players to select which biome they want the species to be exhibited in.
NOTE: Animals listed in italics are semi-aquatic and require both land and water in their exhibit

Vivariums[]
Vivariums are a new feature to New Shores. Represented by a 3x3 board, the vivarium allows the player to house up to nine small "vivarium" species. These animals can be purchased during the Autumn months with an animal exchange separate from main species or co-species and a player may adopt up to two of them at a time. Each species has one of six bonuses that can carry over to the main zoo.
- Education: Two education points are added.
- Buzz: Two buzz points are added for that year only.
- Conservation: If two species with this bonus are adopted, a conservation point is added.
- Popularity: If two species with this bonus are adopted, a popularity point is added.
- Co-Species: A popularity point is added if the player also has a main species that is compatible with aquatic co-species.
- Breeding: A conservation point is added if the animal is successfully bred, although this can only be achieved once per species.
There are a total of 46 vivarium animals, divided into six orders; Amphibians, Birds, Fish, Invertebrates, Reptiles and Xenarthrans. These animals are also divided into four biomes; Dry Forest, Rainforest, Savannah and Water. In order to fully complete a row in a vivarium, the player must adopt three animals that share either the same order, biome or bonuses. In addition, one space is a required to be an Egg Incubation Center for any main species reptiles born.
Unlike main or co-species, each vivarium species can only be adopted by one player, with the exception of the Coral Reef Fish, Diamondback Terrapin and Malawi Cichlids. In addition, the number of species available is tied to the number of active players - for example, a Gila Monster can be adopted regardless of how many players are present, but an Aardvark can only be adopted in a four-player game.

Production[]
Plans for an expansion pack for Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game were first made public on November 13, 2023, although Treecer had previously hinted at potential additions prior. After consulting with backers, Treecer created an account on the instant messaging platform Discord in order to discuss potential themes and additions for the new expansion, which was officially launched on December 12.
New Shores was first revealed to the public on Treecer's YouTube channel during a livestream. The livestream discussed new features included in the expansion, as well as a prototype Animal Exchange with placeholder images. Following the livestream, members of the Discord account were offered the opportunity to suggest changes to the animal roster.
The initial roster featured the Ring-Tailed Lemur as a Level 2 animal, whilst the Galápagos Giant Tortoise was initially a Level 3 animal. At the request of backers to add a marine animal, the Zebra Shark was added to the game as a Level 3 animal, whilst the tortoise was demoted to Level 2 and the lemur was removed entirely. The Co-Species roster was also changed during this time, with the initially-planned Arctic Hare, Axis Deer, Common Dwarf Mongoose, Giant Armadillo and Jabiru all removed from the line-up.
The roster for the Animal House was filled out by a community vote on Discord and the Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game Kickstarter page, which started on March 19, 2024 and concluded on March 30th. A second vote, held exclusively on Discord, was used to finalize the roster. Although listed as the final roster, it was eventually revised again following an error regarding how many species were required, resulting in eight initially-planned animals being removed. A final revision in August 22 added the Chinese Giant Salamander and Straw-Coloured Fruit Bat to the vivarium house at the request of the fanbase, alongside the previously cut Tawny Frogmouth.
Kickstarter[]
The Kickstarter for Zoo Tycoon: The Board Game - New Shores launched on July 2, 2024 with a funding goal of 25,000 CHF. The page including information about the base game, New Shores and the Additional Animal Pack, as well as new rules, components, shipping availability, rewards and stretch goals and much more. The Kickstarter reached its funding goal in only 20 minutes after launch and unlocked 7 stretch goals within the first 24 hours. In total, all 19 stretch goals were revealed and reached. The last stretch goal, adding the Tasmanian Devil to the game, was reached in the last 41 minutes of the kickstarter. Added funds to the kickstarter after the goal was reached as well as the funds made in the Pledge Manager contributed to unlocking the previously cut Ring-Tailed Lemur for the game.
The Kickstarter for New Shores ended on August 1, 2024 with a total funding of 503,898 CHF with 3,731 backers.

Bracket Vote[]
On July 4, 2024 an update was posted on the New Shores Kickstarter asking backers what animal species they would like to see in The Board Game that is not yet part of the game. Backers suggested many species in the comments and on July 6, 2024 an update was posted with the 16 most wanted species in the game. A bracket vote was used to determine the outcome, with the animal receiving the most votes moving on to the next round. The voting for each round would last only 24-hours after the post, and backers would vote by either leaving a comment with their choice or by emailing Marc with their choice.
On July 8, 2024 the first round began, starting with the vote between the Bactrian Camel and Indian Gharial. Notably, the final first-round vote, between the Ring-Tailed Lemur and the African Painted Dog ended with both species tied, and both subsequently made it through to the quarterfinals as a result. The quarterfinals would start on July 17, 2024, this time having two votes going at the same time, and concluded on July 19, 2024 and the semifinals would begin the same day. The final vote, starting on July 21, 2024 and concluding the following day, was held exclusively on Google Forms, with a second vote held the next day to determine a second animal to be added in a manner akin to the Additional Species Pack voting. The winners for the bracket vote and bonus vote were the Tasmanian Devil and Ring-Tailed Lemur, respectively.
