Zoo Tycoon 2: Endangered Species is the first expansion pack released for Zoo Tycoon 2 on October 18, 2005. It includes 20 new animals, such as the Florida Panther, Koala and Orangutan. This pack also introduces sky trams, jeep rides, elevated paths and several new campaigns and challenges.

In Endangered Species, the player can create jeep tours through the zoo's exhibits, and the sky tram allows the guests to ride over the exhibits. There are specially designed objects that, when placed near the path of the sky tram or jeep tour, will increase the entertainment levels of the guests on the rides and subsequently the overall rating of the tour. Elevated paths can be built over exhibits and large bodies of water, allowing visitors and players to walk above the exhibits. The elevated paths allow food courts to be built above enclosures. All three features allow the guests to have better views of the exhibits without invasions of the animals' privacies. These are especially useful when the player is designing a zoo on one of the new maps, in which a portion of the map is secluded off as Conservation Areas with a green fence that denotes how objects cannot be placed in the area.

Enhancements

The behaviours of the animals have been updated. Basic herding behaviours are now observed and a new family tree mechanic prevents animals from breeding with their siblings, parents, or grandparents.

Graphics Updates

In Endangered Species, players can set the water in Zoo Tycoon 2 to be reflective by changing water detail to "very high". Trees, food and all other 2D objects in the original game have been updated to be 3D.

A new feature known as Skin Variants allows certain animals to have variation in their skin color. For example, a herd of zebra can have multiple different stripe patterns. This feature is also present in animals from the later expansion packs Marine Mania and Extinct Animals.
