Zoo Tycoon 2 DS is the sequel of the game Zoo Tycoon DS for the Nintendo DS. It is also the 2nd non-PC Zoo Tycoon game that Altron had developed. The game was published by THQ, instead of Microsoft.
While featuring the same basic concept of raising animals in a zoo, the game has been stripped down both in visuals and possibilities to allow running on the Nintendo DS. Changes include less animal availability, restrictions in the amount of buildings, and a simpler biome system.

There are 36 total animals in Zoo Tycoon 2 DS. Eight are available at any point, while the other 28 require certain criteria to be fulfilled before selection.

- Similarly, there are no animals in the game that use the Fresh Water biome.
- Zoo Tycoon 2 DS is the only game in the franchise in which tigers are entirely absent.
- Despite Zoo Tycoon 2: Extinct Animals having been released four months before Zoo Tycoon 2 DS, both the Saber-Toothed Cat and the Triceratops use their Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs designs.
- Likewise, the only two of the three Zoo Tycoon 2: Marine Mania animals in the game to use their designs from the original Zoo Tycoon and its similarly-named Marine Mania expansion are the California Sea Lion and Bottlenose Dolphin respectively.
